Werner Herzog presents a documentary about the French volcanologist couple Katia and Maurice Krafft

Synopsis

Maurice and Katia Krafft have dedicated their lives to exploring the world’s volcanoes. Their legacy consists of ground-breaking footage of eruptions and their aftermath, created in this stunning visual collage. I’ve never heard of this couple and suddenly they’re getting two documentaries in a row.

I notice the classic St

Herzog has the name and pedigree, but the other film has an Oscar nomination. It’s interesting to see them back to back and compare them. Herzog uses almost exclusively footage shot by the couple.

I’m sure there are other non-Krafft shots to add to the story. It is very convincing that Herzog tells us at the beginning of the film that they are about to die on that mountain in Japan. It’s like introducing a dead body at the beginning of a murder mystery movie.

He is the only pontiff

Both documentaries use terrifying footage of the couple, but this one does not have their voices. This is Herzog’s entire narrative, as in many of his films. Throughout the movie, I kept wanting to hear the couple’s voices, or at least their words.

This is the main difference

It’s more like a tribute given at a funeral, and that may be the intention. I just feel better about the couple from the other movie.
